Lymphedema is tissue swelling that results from an accumulation of protein rich fluid. This fluid is usually drained through your lymphatic system. Lymphedema most commonly affects one or both of the legs. Sometimes, lymphedema can affect both the arms and legs.
Nonsurgical treatments can be used to treat early-stage lymphedema, such as medication, healthy eating habits, and manual compression. Advanced-stage lymphedema may require surgical intervention. Laser therapy can play a crucial role in reducing the arm’s volume, breaking down scar tissue and increasing range of motion. Laser therapy can increase lymph flow, decrease excess protein and tissue, and reduce scar tissue’s ability to stick to the underlying healthy tissue.
Laser therapy can be a useful addition to a treatment plan, especially if there is a substantial amount of hard, thick scar tissue underneath the skin (fibrosis). More research is needed to determine if laser therapy is the right treatment.
