    Overview

The appearance of bulging veins on the hand and arms may make you uncomfortable or bothersome, but they are normal and not harmful. Usually, it is a cosmetic issue rather than a medical one. However, in very few cases, it could be a symptom of a bigger problem.

A person with very prominent hand veins should always consult the doctor to diagnose any underlying issue and implement suitable treatment options.

    Causes

The possible causes of bulging veins on the hand or arms are as follows:

    • Increasing age
    • Genetics
    • Underweight
    • A temporary rise in body temperature
    • Vein inflammation (often caused by infection, injury, or autoimmune disorder)
    • Exercise
    • Superficial thrombophlebitis (it is a condition where inflammation of a vein occurs just under the skin surface, and a small blood clot is formed. It can be painful or uncomfortable, but it is not threatening)
    • Deep vein thrombosis – DVT (a medical condition where the blood clot; occurs in a deeper vein of the arm)

    Best Treatment For Hand Veins

Treatment of the bulging veins in hands may vary depending on the cause. It is often a cosmetic problem than a medical one, and it does not require any treatment.

The following treatment options are available:

    • Sclerotherapy: The treatment involves injecting a chemical, which causes scarring in the vein, thus closes the vein.
    • Vein stripping and ligation: This procedure requires local anesthesia, where a surgeon will seal and tie off the vein to close it. The procedure is preferred for larger veins.
    • Ambulatory phlebectomy: This method involves making a small cut around the vein to remove the offending section of the blood vessel.
    • Laser therapy: This technique involves using amplified light or radio waves to close the bulging veins.

The surgeon may mostly opt for targeted therapy if the bulging veins are due to an underlying medical issue.

If bulging veins are because of DVT, the doctor may opt for blood thinner/anticoagulants to break the clot.

If bulging veins are due to injury, the doctor may opt for antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medications.
