    What is deep vein thrombosis?

When a blood clot (thrombus) is formed in one or more deep veins of your body, usually in your legs, this condition is known as Deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Deep vein thrombosis can result in leg pain and swelling but sometimes it can happen without any noticeable symptoms.

This condition can become more serious and often life-threatening when this clot breaks off from the vein and travels to your lung with the bloodstream. This clot then lodges into the lung thereby restricting its blood supply.

    Symptoms

Many times this condition remains asymptomatic unless the clot breaks off and gets stuck in the lung.
    Some common symptoms include:

      • Pain in the affected leg, usually only one leg is involved
      • Swelling
      • Warmth over the affected area
      • Skin discolouration
      • Cramping or soreness
      • The size of the vein near-surface may be larger than normal

    Causes

All the conditions that can give rise to clot formation or lead to a decrease in the flow of blood can be reasons for DVT

    • Any injury or trauma to the vein
    • Long hours of sitting decrease blood flow
    • Long hours of inactivity like bed rest after surgery or any injury
    • Pregnancy
    • Obesity: it increases the pressure on the leg veins
    • Smoking can also increase the risk of DVT as smoking affects blood circulation
    • Any genetic condition that can increase the risk of blood clot formation in your vessels

    Complications

    • Pulmonary embolism: This is a dangerous condition and can even cause death. In this condition, clots breaks off and travels to the lung, getting lodged there and restricting its blood supply
    • Postphlebitic syndrome: Chronic swelling the leg with skin discoloration, (PTS) It happens few years after DVT. In leg girth inverted champagne bottle like shape of leg & unless is seen in PTS.

    Treatment

Timely treatment of DVT is very important to reduce the risks of complications. Various treatment options available for this disease are:

    • Medications: This includes anticoagulants or blood thinners and clot buster medicine.
    • Compression stockings
    • Lifestyle changes like losing excess weight, active lifestyle
    • Laser therapy for varicose veins which occurs post DVT.

This is the most advanced and minimally invasive treatment procedure.
