    Breast Vein Treatment

Veins are present throughout the body. They carry blood to the heart, although they are not always visible as they are present under the skin.

Sometimes, veins are visible through the skin, especially in the breast. Visible breast veins may alarm you. However, most of the time, they do not indicate a serious problem.

Keep reading to understand more about it.

    Causes

The following are possible causes for visible breast veins:

    • Pregnancy
    • Breast Cancer
    • Breast surgery
    • Mondor’s disease (a rare medication condition that may occur in both men and women, where inflammation of a vein in the breast or chest wall occurs, making the vein visible)
    • Breastfeeding
    • Spider veins (a medication condition in which small, damaged blood vessels may appear on any part of the body)
    • Dermatoporosis (a medication condition in which there is loss of skin function that eventually results in a breakdown of the protective mechanism of the skin)
    • Bruising and Trauma
    • Other conditions (pseudo angiomatous stromal hyperplasia
    • Central venous obstruction due to dialysis or central venous catheter.

Secondary risk factors include genetics, long-term use of corticosteroids, and skin damage due to ultraviolet rays.

    Treatment

Treatment for visible breast veins is usually not required. If people are concerned about their appearance on the breast, they may discuss various options with a cosmetic surgeon.

Several procedures are available that may reduce the appearance of the veins, depending upon the cause. The procedures include:

    • Laser treatments, such as endovenous laser therapy, that helps to shrink or destroy particular veins
    • Radiofrequency ablation can treat small and localized breast veins due to cancer
    • Sclerotherapy, which involves injecting a chemical into the veins, thus causes reduction of the veins

Various cosmetic therapies may help to improve the appearance and ease the pain. In the case of Mondor’s disease, anti-inflammatory medicines may help to reduce the symptoms.

How to Prevent Visible Breast Veins

It is challenging to prevent visible breast veins, especially as a person ages. However, it is possible to reduce the possibility of the visible breast veins by:

    • Protecting the breasts to avoid injury (especially during contact sports)
    • Wearing sunscreen
    • Wear appropriate clothing to prevent skin damage
    • Staying physically active
    • Seeking help from a doctor for lactation if breastfeeding is painful
